What is oxymel?
Ancient civilisations, especially Ancient Greeks and Egyptians , knew about oximela specific effects Oxymel has been used since 400 B.C. The term “oxymel” comes from the Greek “oxys” means sour and “lied” means honey. It is believed that the father of medicine Hippocrates prescribed oxymel to treat various conditions. He used its therapeutic properties to treat respiratory and digestive problems, and as a tonic for health promotion.
Already in the 15th/16th century pharmacopoeia - Antidotarium Mesue - it states: “Honey and vinegar have a power that comes from their blend, and one that is not found in either of these elements alone...”
Oxymel has a pleasant sweet and sour taste with added herbal flavours and properties!
Oxymel contains 3 main ingredients:
- Raw, naturally fermented apple vinegar - vinegar is a fantastic solvent for extracting minerals and vitamins from herbs, which is why vinegar is also known as a probiotic and relieves digestive problems.
- Honey is antibacterial and anti-allergenic. It is full of enzymes and antioxidants that promote digestion, healing and health! A great addition to vinegar.
- Medicinal herbs are plants that contain various organic substances that determine their healing properties. Clover flowers – is a powerful folk medicine containing phytoestrogens (isoflavones), flavonoids and vitamins (C, E, K). They help relieve menopausal symptoms (hot flashes), strengthen bones, improve cardiovascular health and act as an anti-inflammatory and expectorant for respiratory diseases. Helps lower “bad” cholesterol, improves blood vessel elasticity and strengthens capillaries. Promotes the body's cleansing of toxins (blood purifier), stimulates liver and kidney function. Sage - Contains essential oil, the main constituents of which are p-cineole, thujone, pinene, salve, borneol, cedrene. The anti-inflammatory properties of sage are associated with a reduction in the permeability of blood vessels and capillary walls, as well as with a rejuvenating effect on blood composition. These properties have a direct effect on inflammatory processes by inhibiting the viability of pathogenic microflora. Salvia has a strengthening effect on the central nervous system. The preperates contained in the plant also exert a slight antispasmodic, liver-protective, ulcer-treating, anti-lytogenic effect. Sage also has a sugar-lowering effect and is therefore recommended for mild forms of diabetes. The bitter substances in the leaves of the plant stimulate the secretion of the gastrointestinal tract.
Oxymel has a broad spectrum of effects on the human body. In general, oxymel is antibacterial, immune-boosting, metabolism-stimulating and isotonic, to name just a few. In addition to its health-promoting effects, oxymel can have a positive effect on well-being, as it has a natural detoxifying effect.
Application:
Oxymel is suitable as a refreshing drink - just add 1-2 tablespoons of oxymel to a glass of mineral water, water and enjoy it on a summer's day.
Oxymel also has applications in the kitchen. It can be used to make delicious marinades or salad dressings. Mixing oxymel with olive oil, salt and pepper gives a sweet and sour flavour combination for use in gastronomy.
Oxymel can also be used for pickling and preserving vegetables and herbs due to its preservative properties.
