The term “oxymel” comes from the Greek “oxys” means sour and “lied” means honey. It is believed that the father of medicine Hippocrates prescribed oxymel to treat various conditions. He used its therapeutic properties to treat respiratory and digestive problems, and as a tonic for health promotion.
Already in the 15th/16th century pharmacopoeia - Antidotarium Mesue - it states: “Honey and vinegar have a power that comes from their blend, and one that is not found in either of these elements alone...”
Oxymel has a pleasant sweet and sour taste with added herbal flavours and properties!
Oxymel contains 3 main ingredients:
- Raw, naturally fermented apple vinegar - vinegar is a fantastic solvent for extracting minerals and vitamins from herbs, which is why vinegar is also known as a probiotic and relieves digestive problems.
- Honey is antibacterial and anti-allergenic. It is full of enzymes and antioxidants that promote digestion, healing and health! A great addition to vinegar.
- Medicinal herbs are plants that contain various organic substances that determine their healing properties. Black elderflowers - have a pain-relieving effect. Black elder flowers contain flavonoids, organic acids (malic, acetic, valerian, chlorogenic, caffeic), terpenes, the glycoside sambunigrin, sambucin, rutin; essential oil, vitamin C, antiseptics benzaldehyde and cinnamates; rutin-like glycoside altrinome, isoamylaminamine, choline, mucilages, ethyl isobutyl. Notes - activates and strengthens the brain and stimulates mental abilities. Because of its pleasant, refreshing taste, mint is commonly used for nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and bloating, gas and to stimulate the appetite. Mint stimulates the excretion of bile and can also be used as a mild diuretic. Mentha piperita also improves blood circulation. Peppermint is believed to have anti-tumour activity.
